Another company to keep in mind for overhauls is Zephyr Engines (zephyrengines.com). They’ve been a long time Piper Flyer supporter and were rated the “top-rated shop” in 2010 by Aviation Consumer.

I am pretty sure Teledyne Mattituck Services is out of business now. I agree Penn Yan is a good shop. I just asked Penn Yan for a quote on an engine for my 1966 Cherokee 180C (only to update my hourly setaside fund, not to do anything yet) and the price was around $20,400. The Penn Yan e-mail said “The above engine prices include new lightweight starter, new slick magnetos, new ignition harness, overhauled carburetor, and spark plugs, new Lycoming cam, lifters, cylinders and hydraulic units.” My plane has had a Penn Yan engine in it for more than 10 years now, and with regular flying runs good with very good compression readings at Annual.

All great suggestions! We just completed our new overhaul limit on our 0-360A4A and elected to stay local. Aircraft Engine Specialist of Chandler AZ, provide an offer of $18.600 with new ECI Titan Cylinder’s. They came over on the 18 Dec and delivered the engine back on 5 Feb. The camshaft needed replacing and we install a new Lycoming camshaft with new lifters. Tim Varga of Aircraft Engine Specialist offered to install the Electroair Ignition System for additional $1800.00. With a current retail of this ignition system over $3000.00, that was an easy decision. To offset state sale tax, Tim included a set of all new Teflon hoses for the motor. As if yesterday, I just flew past 10hrs and have been very impressed with the end product. If you have not done so already, consider install a JPI engine monitoring for your new engine. We had a JPI 700 and upgraded to the JPI 730. The airplane goes in tomorrow for an oil change and a compression check…..One other item, by staying close to home I was able to make a couple visits to the shop to take a few pics of the engine going together….

I had a good experience with Teledyne Mattituck Services, Inc. (in New York) in late 2003. Overhauled my O-320 to new tolerances, including new Millenium cylinders. Have flown about 200 hours on the engine and oil consumption is about one quart per 20+ hours. They provided new engine accessories as part of the deal (fuel pump, mags, carb, etc.). Price was competitive and even included replacing the cam with a new one at no additional charge. Also, did the upgrade to 160 hp at no additional charge. I had to pay the freight both ways, but even with that their price was competitive.

Penn Yan does excellent work. I would recommend contacting Bill Middlebrook – President of Penn Yan. Tell him that you are Piper Flyer Association member. There are so many different parts that can be replaced when overhauling an engine and when you receive a quote, one has to ask if that includes new Magnetos…for instance. Get in touch with Bill and ask what his quote all includes. I know some shops out there that will quote one thing…then they get your engine…then the quote changes. Then what do you do…pay to have it shipped back…ouch. Penn Yan offers free shipping, I believe. -PFA

I am up for my first engine overhaul on my 1968 Cherokee 180. Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. I have a local shop who does good work quoting $13,000, while Penn Yan is quoting $16,000. $17,000 for Mellennium engine. Any history?
