Hickory, NC (KHKY) has been an airport I have flown over many times over the years but never had a chance to stop in. Today I took the time to fly in and visited the Air Museum there. This is a small airport but it does have a tower. The museum aircraft are out on the ramp and they have a variety of military aircraft from the Vietnam and later era. There is a nice area inside the old terminal they are using for displays on flying memorabilia and there are some nice mementos there too. They have plans to build a much nicer building to display the planes so in the future this may be a nicer vist. The museum staff very much enjoyed us visiting and flying in with our Apache.
HKY doesn't have airline service at this time so the "terminal" is very quiet now. They do have a cafe at the terminal but it was closed today due to staffing issues.
If you want a fun place to spend a hour or two looking at planes and maybe grab a bite consider HKY. I would call ahead to check on whether the museum or cafe are open but otherwise I great place to use as an excuse to go fly!
